Fixed-term, fixed-rate deposits — single and joint

Fixed term, fixed rate

Know the return before you commit

A certificate of deposit locks a sum for an agreed term at a rate fixed on the day you open it. The rate does not move if markets do, which is the point: it is the one product on this site where the return is known before you commit.

A certificate is a commitment, not a savings account. Funds are locked for the full term. Withdrawing early forfeits accrued interest and may reduce the principal returned. Choose the shortest term you are confident you can hold.
Single Account

One holder, one signature, full control

A certificate held in one name. You alone fund it, set the term and receive the proceeds at maturity.

Term Fixed rate Deposit range What this term is for
3 months 4.10% $1,000 – $24,999 Shortest lock. Suited to capital you may need back within the year.

12 months 5.25% $10,000 – $149,999 The standard term. Best balance of rate against how long capital is committed.

Joint Account

Two holders, shared ownership, survivorship rights

A certificate held in two names, with both holders owning the whole deposit rather than a half each.

Choosing between them

Single or joint?

Choose single if…

  • The money is yours alone and you want sole control of it
  • You want to instruct without needing a second signature
  • You would rather the certificate pass under your will
  • You are starting smaller — minimums are lower on every term

Choose joint if…

  • Two people are funding it and both should own the whole deposit
  • You want it to pass to the survivor without waiting on probate
  • You can meet the higher minimums and want the rate premium
  • Both holders are comfortable with full visibility of the account

Rates are fixed the day you open

The rate shown is the rate you keep for the whole term, whatever happens to markets afterwards.
